COMMUNITY PARTNER
MESA UNITED WAY/ HELENS HOPE CHEST
ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Helen's Hope Chest is a service of Mesa United Way. We serve foster families in a unique, boutique like setting where they can shop for clothing and other basic need items all free of charge. We are looking for service learning volunteers who can help us with all of our normal volunteer tasks. These tasks include: Taking in donations, sorting donations, cleaning, stocking rooms, working with families as they shop, and more.
We are also in need of service learning students who can do drives for us to help us collect the items we need; such as clothing, shoes, school supplies, etc.
Population served
Foster and kinship children/teens (ages newborn - 18) and the families that care for them.
Community need/impact
Funding for foster care has gone through major cuts and the most recent cuts brought the clothing allowance per foster child to around only $12 per month! We all know this is not enough to purchase clothing, especially when many times a child enters a foster home with only the clothes on their backs! Mesa United Way started Helen's Hope Chest to help bridge the funding gap so that foster families can continue to care for the children in need of homes.
With over 11000 kids in foster care in Arizona and very little funding, Helens Hope Chest is now serving around 300 children a month. Every child get's to shop for free four times a year getting up to five outfits, new socks, underwear, school and hygiene supplies, toys and books and a quilt.
