Population served

Disasters impact people from all walks of life everyday.  The vision of the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter is to partner with the people of Arizona to develop and foster safer families, neighborhoods and worksites. Our chapter serves over 5.2 million people in our 10 county jurisdiction. Interns will focus primarily on underserved communities and populations in high risk disaster areas within Phoenix.

Community need/impact

American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter serves ten of Arizona’s 15 counties. We are a volunteer-driven organization, with about 30 paid staff and 800 unpaid staff.  Services provided by the Red Cross include disaster response and recovery, service to the military, international services, blood services and health and safety training. The community outreach team works to connect the community with the information necessary to prevent, prepare, and respond to disasters.

We respond to house fires on a daily basis and respond to apartment fires, floods, microbursts and wildfires multiple times each year. Red Cross workers have a direct impact on the communities they serve.  Meeting with a family that has just been burned out of their homes, Red Cross workers provide immediate access to food, clothing, shelter, health and mental health resources.

As part of your internship, you will be working to engage both underserved populations and to provide information on resiliency in areas most frequently impacted by disasters.
