Background Check is required prior to start date.  The South Mountain YMCA will cover all cost for background check.  This process usually is completed within 2-3 business days.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

Coordinates and supervises the youth/ teen center.  Creates projects and activities for teens to do on a daily basis and stays within the required budget.

  1. Oversees a quality Teen Camp program, including but not limited to setting up field trips, guest speakers, art and other classes, tutoring, computer technology, service learning and more
  2. Assists in supervising and scheduling volunteers.
  3. Develops positive relationships with participant and provides motivational support and guidance.
  4. Encourages member involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
  6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency procedures.  Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  7. Conveys basic knowledge of all program areas to members and participants.

Population served

The community of South Mountain YMCA is a low income population.  This community is culturaly eclectic, but with a large population of hispanic.

Community need/impact

The South Mountain YMCA is a low economic area with a median income of $35,000.  With the area being such a low income community most of the kids in the area are latch key kids.  These kids that are out on the street are susceptable to gangs and drugs.   The youth/ teen center provides a safe and fun environment for the kids and relieves the stree of the parent.  The youth and teen center will provide technology and homework assistance, tutoring, physical activity, and cultural activities.

This individual will assist in providing a safe and fun environment for kids in the community to come and participate in organized programming ensuring positive behavior.  This individual will be able to assist these participants with their school work, which will propell them to a higher education.
