All Paths of HOPE services are delivered by the HOPE Corps, motivated, trained volunteers from the communities we serve.
The first step on the path to success is financial education. Participants attain the skills of healthy money management and learn to take control of their financial futures through a free three-part series on:
Financial Recovery
Charge It Right
Pay Yourself First
Financial education classes are for individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet or get ahead. Classes help participants achieve financial stability as they work towards long-term prosperity.
Those who complete the series are entered into a drawing for 3 grocery gift cards.
Classes are offered in English and Spanish, open to community members across Maricopa county. Classes are targeted to low-to-moderate income individuals and families. To make classes more accessible, childcare and light meals are provided.
Class sizes average 10 – 15 participants and are typically held at community and faith-based partner organizations. Classes are scheduled for two hours, which includes check-in and mealtime before the 90-minute class instruction begins.
Financial education classes require (2) Financial Education Instructors. Financial Education curriculum and volunteer training are provided.
ASU Service Learning Interns will be paired with an experienced Financial Education Instructor and will be expected to teach several Financial Education classes throughout their internship.
Population served
Financial education participants are adult men and women living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
Most individuals and families living at that income level have accumulated few assets that will allow them to survive a financial crisis and to have an adequate living into retirement. They have difficulty investing in a college education or a business that can help them improve their economic condition. Financial problems at home reduce productivity at work and can sometimes end in unemployment.
Community need/impact
Paths of HOPE is a Catholic Charities program that helps motivated individuals and families achieve long-term prosperity.
Paths of HOPE was developed in answer to Catholic Charities USA’s call to reduce poverty in America by 50 percent by 2020.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 900,000 Arizonans live at or below the federal poverty level (e.g. $22,050 annual income for a family of four). Living at that income level leaves individuals and families vulnerable to financial crisis and can make it difficult to meet basic needs or to get ahead.
Individuals and families with low incomes often lack access to many resources, only some of which are financial. Resources for prosperity include income, housing, personal and family health, positive social relationships, strong role models, educational advancement and more.
The lack of savings among Arizonans adversely affects communities as well as households; without a material stake in their community are less likely to take responsibility for helping to maintain and improve their community.
