REQUIRED/DESIRED SKILLS

Undergraduate students with some previous work or internship experience preferred, but any interested applicants will be considered. Candidates studying any major are encouraged to apply, however, individuals concentrating in marketing, journalism, communications, public relations or other related fields are preferred. Candidate qualifications include:

At least one year of post-secondary education in general business with an interest in economics and finance

Ability to balance multiple assignments and meet deadlines

Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and internet based databases

Ability to conduct internet research

Positive attitude

Ability to read annual and quarterly reports and extract pertinent information

Ability to interact professionally with staff and associates

Strong organizational skills evidencing attention to detail

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

The Town of Gilbert Business Development Division is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented individual to serve as an Economic Development Research Intern. The Economic Development Research Intern works directly with the business development staff. The ideal candidate is well-organized, proactive and committed to conducting a high level of research. She or he should be able to balance administrative and clerical responsibilities with independent project management. Assignments could include research on businesses within the Gilbert Targeted industry structure that are primed to expand; retention visits with staff to key employers within Gilbert; researching incentive programs offered in other states; participation in stakeholder groups with members of the public and business leaders from around the Arizona; conducting financial analysis on companies and industry sectors; assist in preparing meetings with small businesses in Gilbert; literature reviews of industry journals and trade publications; development of research briefs; and assisting in the preparation of reports and proposals.

Population served

The population served includes not only Gilbert residents, but also the general working population in the Southeast Valley within a reasonable commute time to Gilbert.

Community need/impact

Located in the Southeast Valley of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Gilbert, Arizona is a growing municipality attracting commercial development opportunities as a means to diversify the community’s economic base and provide high-paying jobs for its residents. As the main mission of the Gilbert Business Development Division to attract and retain business and industry to Gilbert, the Division is dedicated to increasing the competitiveness of the community and the Southeast Valley through its marketing and business development efforts.

International and domestic business relocation, expansion and retention services

Regional and national marketing

Economic research and analysis

Economic development not only creates jobs, but assists with the generation of Town revenue that ultimately goes back into Gilbert's schools, parks, fire and police protection, recreation programs, etc.
