ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Make a difference in a childs life through Future for KIDS “Discover your Future” program!
This internship opportunity allows students to work directly with at-risk youth in our mentorship program. Our program is focused on providing academics, athletics, and ethics to at-risk youth in the valley. The program itself is 2 hours, the first hour consists of homework assistance, the 2nd hour consists of fitness and nutrition education. The program is held Monday-Thursday between 3-6pm at 5 different sites locations.
Interns will select the amount of sites and locations they work at in order to reach their desired hours.
Population served
We have mentored over 129,000 at-risk children throughout the Metropolitan Phoenix area since 1991. The target population that we serve represent children ages 6 – 13 that are: 75.3 % Hispanic, 20.5% Black, and 31% of these children are English language learners. 87.1% of the children we serve receive free and reduced price lunch programs which are based on Federal poverty guidelines and by household size.
Community need/impact
Future for KIDS works with at-risk youth, who are in desperate need of adult mentors. Many of these children are not eating correctly or staying active, and are having trouble in school. Our internship program allows the children to interact with positive role models and discover their interests and skills. The children are given ideas and support on how to live a healthy lifestyle and are provided with fun fitness activities and a free healthy snack every week.
With the help of committed interns, we can continue with our free healthy lifestyle after-school programs and sports and fitness camps. Children in the community rely on our programs and camps to provide continued contact with caring adults who emphasize the importance of education and maintaining a healthy life style. Through our programs and camps, we provide the positive role models needed to encourage children to excel and be confident while they mature and become tomorrow’s community leaders.
