ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

Youth center mentors will have direct contact with homeless and at risk youth.  Mentors will work directly with StandUp leadership to create a community and individual programs to help the homeless and at risk youth.  At the beginning mentors will help brainstorm and create a roadmap for the homeless and at risk youth.  Volunteers mentors and intern mentors will then be responsible for implementing these programs.  This can include small group sessions to build trust, progress reports, positive reward systems.

Population served

We would help children very young as 10, but our average age range of our population is 18 to 21.

Community need/impact

Much needed mentorship of homeless and at risk youth will gained from this internship.  It is a chance to design a program and implement it right away to see what works and what does not.

Intern mentors will gain direct experience of brainstorming a "roadmap of progress" for the homeless and at risk youth population.  Mentors will then be able to work directly, on a small group scale or an individual scale with the youth to see what worked and what did not.

The Youth Center provides homeless youth with the following:

  • A safe environment to rest
  • The place to make meaningful relationships with caring adults
  • Referral services for available programs throughout the community
  • Meals and snacks
  • Telephone messages and mail service
  • Hygiene products

  • Educational assistance (books, transportation passes, etc.)
