ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
The Service Learning Student will work closely and, at times, on their own to assist the Self-Esteem Room Manager with daily preparation, set-up, tear-down and operation of events and workshops within the Self-Esteem Room at the Resource Center. Creating fliers, gathering items for client distribution, ensuring that clothing is steamed and ready for client use, organizing product and clothing in warehouse and on stock shelves, putting together gift bags for make-up application course attendees, ensuring that the flow of clients through the wardrobing process is fluid and all clients are seen in a timely manner, other small duties relating to self-esteem preparation and execution.
Population served
Women aged 18 and older are encouraged to visit the center however, the majority of our dempgraphic is aged 30 - 55 and a mother, single mother, divorcee, or woman going through some sort of transitional period of her life seeking resources and tools from Fresh Start in order to reach self-sufficiency.
Community need/impact
A large percentage of our clients do not have access to funds in order to purchase an outfit for a job interview or court hearing. Fresh Start, through the assistance of donations from individuals and retailers in the community, will provide a client with a complete outfit for that big day to include shoes, handbags, accessories and any other necessities to ensure she carries herself with confidence. We also provide discounted haircuts, manicures, pedicures, make-up application courses and inner beauty bootcamp classes so that they are able to feel empowered and confident inside and out. The students will be a large part of making sure that every woman gets the most out of her experience by assisting with preparations and execution of each event.
These are women who would not otherwise be able to afford to purchase an outfit, get a much-needed haircut or obtain a healing touch therapy session. They could be your sister, your aunt, your cousin...by assisting our center to provide these services, you will be touching the lives of many and giving them the sense of strength and hope that they are confident, vital women.
