REQUIRED/DESIRED SKILLS

Candidates studying any major are encouraged to apply, however, individuals concentrating in marketing, journalism, communications, public relations or other related fields are preferred. Candidate qualifications include:

• Strong professional writing skills
• Ability to develop and implement story ideas
• Familiarity with social media applications such as Linked-in, Facebook and Twitter
• Use of graphic design programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are preferred
• Highly motivated to self-initiate projects, learn, work in a team environment and grow professional skills
• Creative and open to giving and receiving feedback
• Have an interest in marketing, communications, and/or media relations

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

This individual would assist the Gilbert Office of Economic Development with its entreprenuership program that specifically encourages the growth and development of small, under-represented businesses currently operating within the Gilbert community. Tasks would include researching and marketing the program to prospective participants and encouraging them to participate.

Involvement would include identifying and attracting commercial investment opportunities to the Gilbert community through the development of press releases, story ideas and general marketing outreach to trade publications and an identified target audience that includes commercial developers, brokers, financiers, national and international businesses, etc. Outreach would include working within social media opportunities such as Linked-In, Facebook and Twitter.

Population served

The population served includes not only Gilbert residents, but also the general working population in the Southeast Valley within a reasonable commute time to Gilbert.

Community need/impact

Located in the Southeast Valley of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Gilbert, Arizona is a growing municipality attracting commercial development opportunities as a means to diversify the community’s economic base and provide high-paying jobs for its residents.  As the main mission of the Gilbert Office of Economic Development to attract, retain and grow business and industry to Gilbert, the Office is dedicated to increasing the competitiveness of the community and the Southeast Valley through its marketing and business development efforts.
Basic services provided include:

• International and domestic business relocation, expansion and retention services
• Regional and national marketing
• Economic research and analysis

Economic development not only creates jobs, but assists with the generation of Town revenue that ultimately goes back into Gilbert's schools, parks, fire and police protection, recreation programs, etc.
