Community need/impact

New Way Academy is one of few approved schools for children with learning disabilities. Since1968, thousands of children in K-12 have attended New Way to learn how to manage or overcome their learning difference and find academic success. A learning difference is a neurobiological disorder which affects a person's ability to speak, listen, read, write, spell, reason, recall, organize information or do mathematics. Students may have dyslexia, ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, or motor skills challenges. For over 43 years, the School has been instrumental for those students who cannot find success in a mainstream classroom.  These are students who might be "zoned out" or disengaged in class.  They are bright, but simply learn differently.  Once they learn how to work with their disability, they become engaged and productive members of both their schools and the community.

Students with special needs who do not get the help they need tend to drop out of school at three times the rate of children in mainstream classes.  The goal of New Way Academy is to help students reach their full potential.  New Way prepares students to go back to a mainstream classroom if they are able or to stay at the Academy and further develop the skills they will need as adults.  This has tremendous implications for community as students seek employment or stay in school.
