ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

Interns will facilitate a structured tutorial session for 5-7 students twice a week or more. This tutorial is facilitated with certified teacher supervision through questioning with the purpose of leading students to answers through understanding process. Training will be provided. Sessions occur either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday with special duties on Fridays. This is great opportunity to see the world of education through a hands-on approach. It is not a typical tutoring situation. You are making connections with students and learning with them.

Population served

The AVID student population is generally highly diverse representing a variety of cultures and typically students coming from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Community need/impact

AVID students represent a "middle" group who typically come from non-college families. They have college ability but need support to build the skills to get there. The schools needing support include Dobson High School and Taylor Junior High.

Interns will be supporting the advancement of students who typically would not be going to college. The positive impact of interns in assisting students to build a skill bank for college readiness is immeasurable.
