ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

Interns would assist the HoA staff, patients, and patient families by being a social support to patient and family, feeding patients, assisting in In-Patient Units as needed, bereavement calls to families, bereavement visits to families, helping with support groups for the bereaved (which are open to the community), and by being part of the circle of support to our patients and their families.

Population served

Patients have a terminal diagnosis with a prognosis of 6 months or less to live. Patients are usually adults with a predominance of elderly. We serve the patients and families while the patient is alive and serve their families for 13 months after the patient dies.

Community need/impact

The patients and families are usually in crisis. Often it is a new diagnosis and so the patient and family are having to adjust to the prognosis and imminent death of pt. There may be family issues that need to be adressed due to a fragile family situation as well as the patients well being that will need to be maintained. HoA supports the enire family system and their needs, thus helping the community to have resources for those who are dying and for those who are bereaved.

To be able to bring comfort, sympathy, friendship, help, and even joy into the patients and or their families lives at this time of crisis in their lives is a very fulfilling job.
