ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Our interns conduct needs assessments with Native American pastors concerning the benevolence and facilities needs in their reservation parishes and their communities at large. They extrapolate information and work with director to define and publish those needs to various faith groups around the country to obtain donations and to plan and direct their teams while serving on the reservations. Our interns clean, inventory and maintain construction equipment, camping gear, as well as community outreach equipment (children's carnival equipment, food & clothing distribution equipment and health screening equipment and supplies). They help with purchasing of needed materials and the staging and logistics of getting it to the reservations as the teams arrive. They also assist the teams with transportation and housing planning. They communicate with team leaders and community leaders on a regular basis. Our interns also collect and distribute donations of schools supplies, clothing, and food. They also assist with the development and distribution of marketing/promotional items as well as procuring physical resources for the organization
Population served
We work with the White Mountain Apache, San Carlos Apache and the Navajo nations.
Community need/impact
Houses of faith serve the communities on the reservations with food, clothing and other benevolent items. They have activities for children and teens at risk. The community at large is struggling with not only poverty, but also the diseases of poverty.
Our interns will see the impact of the sick receiving assessments and lifestyle counseling from volunteer health professionals, see families who are supporting several children who may or may not be their own with activities for their kids as well as clothing and food. We also are involved in cleaning up, painting and construction of buildings, installation of playgrounds, etc. We work alongside Native American youth, challenging them about their life pursuits, education, etc.
