ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Students would be asked to help provide mentoring/instruction/tutoring with all class assignments correlated to the Arizona State Academic Standards. The mentoring would afford the students a different perspective on what a university-bound person experiences. This relationship is so valuable and can not be replicated outside our classroom environment. In addition the interns would be involved directly with the students learning and achievements. Students will be responsible for planning and implementing science lessons that are standard based.
Population served
Sunland School is an inter-city school located in south Phoenix. The school is a K-8th grade school. We are a Title I school where more than 80% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our school is considered a community school because many of our students walk to school. The majority of our students come from lower socio-economic families. Many of our students are English language learners. Our students need one on one assistance in all academic areas. Our need on campus is to provide science experiences for our students. The Sunland student population is hungry for mentors that will help them understand academic concepts and provide empowering experiences. We have a fantastic staff and amazing administrators. We have a parent program that invites the parents to come on campus and learn along with their children. My hope is to create a partnership with ASU and collectively provide successful, and meaningful experiences for my students.
Community need/impact
Many of our students come to school and are lacking experiences that involve college bound individuals because they come from homes where both parents work and have not attended college. Our students need role models that will encourage them to set goals of attending a university. The fact that our students will represent their community in the future by preparing for the future can only bring about positive change.
For over10 years I have had the extreme honor of having effective interns in my classroom. They have provided mentoring and academic experiences for my students. The interns came prepared to teach science lessons that were so intriguing for the students that they couldn't wait for them to return. The students and interns developed a relationship that could not have been created elsewhere. The time and dedication given by interns had a lasting positive impression on my students, because the learning was in a safe environment. My students were excited about learning and the knowledge that the interns shared with them was priceless. The impact the interns will have on the students will be many: increased self esteem, attendance, and higher academic test scores. For the last 2 years our 8th grade Sunland students have had the highest science scores in the district. I would like to think that the experiences they had in my class with the interns contributed to their success.
