COMMUNITY PARTNER

Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

The Interns will be able to assist in a variety of areas.  For the computer lab, the intern will be responsible for assisting in the teaching of each member's basic computer knowledge.  The Gamesroom Intern will aid in maintaining and supervising the lounge area and getting the members interested in interacting with others through games.  In Power Hour, interns will assist with seeing that each member receiveds personal attention in the necessary subject areas.  Interns may also assist with the planning and implementing of the Physical Education program.  Interns working with teens will assist with assessing the needs of teens in the community and developing programs to meet those needs.  Relative to sports, coaching positions may be needed to be filled by interns.  Interns in the Discovery Zone will help the planning and organization of classes to challenge and bring out the creativity in educational projects for our members of all ages.  Arts and Crafts Interns will help plan and organize classes  to challenge and bring out the creativity of all age members.

Population served

Interns will directly be serving five (in full-time kindergarten) to 18 year olds and, indirectly, their parents.  Their service is very much needed to help give the members a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and a chance to be heard and to influence decisions respectfully.  By guiding, instructing, and influencing these members in a positive manner, they will be helping create responsible adults for the future.  They will also be assisting the parents in the community by helping them know their children are safe and learning in a fun environment.  Their efforts will also be felt by the community at large by reducing the number of children and teens wandering our neighborhoods.

Community need/impact

In our community, kids leave school at the end of the day and a lot of them have no where to go.  Not everyone can afford daycare and that's why the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley is here.  We also offer Summer Day Camp during the week to help provide a safe and fun environment for children ages 5-18.  Interns will be assisting parents by helping their children have fun and learn during the long days when the parents are at work. We are the positive place for kids!

Anytime a child or teen learns self respect and respect for others, those in the community benefit.  Having concerned interns and staff providing creative, productive, learning activities for the members will help them to see the importance of serving others.  With the interns assistance, the members can take on more responsibilities for themselves and help those who are less fortunate than themselves.  What better way to make a difference in our community?
