ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Interns will work directly with a classroom teacher to provide and interactive experience for the students. Duties will vary slightly from classroom to classroom. However, you can expect that you will be working directly with the children. This could take the form of reading or tutoring small groups or individuals. The remediation you provide to these small groups will supplement the lessons administered by the certified teacher in the classroom. If the intern demonstrates proficiency with small group instruction there may be additional opportunities to assist with the design and delivery of daily lessons and activities.
Population served
Imagine Schools at Camelback is a public charter school serving an extremely disadvantaged population. 90% of our students are on a free lunch and breakfast program because they can not afford the $1.25 reduced-price lunch. Many of our students are refugees from around the world. Many are English Language Learners with extremely limited exposure to English. Many have experienced homelessness or are currently homeless. Many are several grade levels behind academically. Many have seen or experienced horrible acts of violence. Every single one of our students has the potential to do wonderful things. All of the teachers at Imagine set high expectations for every student because every student deserves a great education.
Community need/impact
You will provide these students with valuable learning experiences through small group instruction or by leading after school activities. Although the most important impact you will have is when a student decides they want to be like you. You will become a role model and mentor to students who desperately need it. You will become a symbol for where they could be (college) if they continue to work hard in the classroom.
You have the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child.
