ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
The intern will assist in the job center. This includes helping the community members with job searches, resume building, and teaching basic computer skils such as email. In addtion to the job center the intern will teach an 8 - 10 week computer class. This class will help community members young and old with basic computer skills. The intern will have direct contact with the community and require basic computer skills. Additional training will be provided.
Population served
The Rio Vista Center serves a zip code with a population of 63,000 residents, of which
nearly 17,000 are living below poverty level. Among the adult population, 45 percent have less than a high school education. As a result, per capita income is 50% less than the US average and long-term poverty is epidemic.
Community need/impact
Access to critical human services stabilizes families and provides a platform educational and occupational development. However, crime and poverty, high demand for services at government offices, low awareness for programs, and their eligibility requirements and other challenges reduce utilization and prevent stability. When these challenges impact residents throughout a neighborhood, communities cannot transform themselves.
The needs of our community continue to outweigh the volunteers we have necessary to do the work. The intern will be essential in allowing more needs to be addressed. The intern will also help raise the awareness necessary for the resources that are needed.
