ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

AVID Tutors: participants will receive formal training in the AVID tutorial process and tutor students during the AVID elective class time. Through direct interaction with AVID students, Service Learning Interns will help create deeper understanding of concepts covered in core content classes.  In addition, they will help AVID students develop the skills necessary to become self-directed learners. Tutorials are not just homework help.  Tutors help push students' thinking utilizing inquiry. They facilitate group discovery; they do not give answers. They help students reflect on their own learning.

Population served

The student profile served in the tutor sessions meet one or more of the following criteria:  First to attend college; Historically underserved in four-year colleges; low income; Special circumstances.  They are students with academic potential: Average to high test scores; 2.0-3.5 GPA; College potential with support; Desire and determination.

Community need/impact

Avid recommends program tutors at a student ratio of 7:1. Current college students or students that are recent college graduates are preferred for placement. We believe current or recent college students will be the most successful in connecting with our AVID students and encouraging them to persevere in their college aspirations. It is our goal that 100% of our AVID students attend a four year college/university.

The tutorial process is one of the key component in the AVID program.  It helps provide the necessary support mechanisms for the 9-12 grade AVID students to help them reach their potential and attain their college dreams.  Current college students are the most desirable AVID tutors because they can speak directly to AVID students about what it takes to attend and be successful in college.
