ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Assist the Child Watch staff in providing free child care for the women that visit the center to attend workshops and obtain other resources in order to improve their quality of life. The Child Watch intern will help with arts and crafts projects, encourage children to play and interact together, assist with infant care, distribute snack items, other duties as needed.
Population served
The Fresh Start Women’s Resource Center serves adult women aged 18 and older: Women in transition-women that are facing significant changes in their lives or who have just become the sole support of themselves or their families. Underemployed women-women who are employed but whose earnings cannot sustain her or her family’s needs. Domestic violence victims--women whose lives have been affected by abuse and are striving for independence. Although these are our target population, no woman is turned away.
The Child Watch center is available to mothers and legal guardians with children birth to 12 years of age. Most of the children that come into the Child Watch center are 2-4 years of age. Our ratios are low (max of 16 children) and based on how old each child is to ensure the safety of all children that visit our center.
Community need/impact
Our Women's Resource Center assists many women that are currently dealing with transition, whether it be going through a divorce, leaving an abusive relationship, losing a job, changing careers, having a child or even dealing with a death in the family. No matter the transition, Fresh Start has the resources to help women effectively deal with what life hands them. And as an assistant in the Child Watch program, interns will have to opportunity to care for children that are also affected by these same issues. They will be able to alleviate some of the stress of finding a trusted individual to care for their child or children so that they may obtain the necessary resources in order to take a step towards self-sufficiency.
Social justice, women's issues intervention and increasing access to technology.
