Population served

The newly arrived refugee community (0-180 days) will be served with this internship.  Upon first arriving it is critical to get clients on a pathway to self sufficiency.  Many times, these clients arrive in the U.S. with little relevant job experience, language barrieres, and cultural differences that make obtaining employment difficult.  The employment specialists work at educating refugee clients on how to find employment and transition successfully into the workplace in America.

Community need/impact

When refugee clients first arrive in the U.S. it is the employment specialists priority to provide trainings and job readiness facilitation to assist clients in obtaining early employment upon arrival.  By assisting refugees with improving their resumes, English language training, computer trainings, and job readiness trainings it provides them with better opportunities for gaining employment.  This is critical to fulfilling one of the IRC's main focus areas of having its clients transition to self-sufficiency soon after arriving in the U.S.

By assisting newly arrived refugees with job readiness trainings it helps them become more competitive in gaining early employment.  This helps refugees become self sufficient and active members of the local Phoenix economy.  It also provides local employers with willing and qualified workers looking to improve the business they work for as well as the commnity they are a part of.
