ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Veterans Support Intern duties:
Working directly with all stakeholders, create a program to identify, assist, and track veterans in need of services in and around Maricopa, and create protocols and procedures for veteran volunteers and the City of Maricopa, to follow in support of our veteran’s assistance program.
Document and refine our procedures in how we conduct our Operation Welcome Home ceremonies with the City of Maricopa (in Operation Welcome Home we hold a small ceremony quarterly during City Council meetings to honor vets returning to Maricopa)
Population served
Veterans living in Maricopa who have service related problems and who may not know there are resources available to assist them of may be unable to navigate the complex VA system.
Community need/impact
The 2010 Census indicates that between 3000 to 4000 veterans live in the city of Maricopa. The Community of Veterans in Maricopa have a desire to take care of their own. They know there are Veteran who need assistance with anything from navigating VA paperwork to homelessness and PTSD. The Maricopa Veterans community needs assistance in setting up a program that to seek out and help these people.
The City of Maricopa prides itself as being a growing City that retains its small town feel. A key trait of any small town is a sense of community support of these in need. We know we have veterans who need assistance and services and we have a large group of volunteers who are ready and willing to help. It will benefit the community as a whole if we can help focus the energies of the volunteers and set up a program so they can effectively offer assistance to Maricopa veterans
