Adults, homeless and very low income.
Community need/impact
LDRC serves adults (18 and over) who are experiencing homelessness, and others at a very low-income status. Many have learning disabilities, and their needs were not addressed while they were in school.
Many have physical or mental disabilities, substance abuse histories, or are coming out of the corrections system. By collaborating with a group of service providers, the LDRC offers restrooms, hydration, a post office, GED and computer tutoring, phones, housing assistance, employment services, government benefit eligibility, substance use counseling and 12-step groups, mental health services, identification, art, yoga, writing and other programming.
Many homeless adults do not have the skills necessary to obtain long-term employment. Our goal at LDRC is to end homelessness, and an important step is to provide our clients with opportunities to further themselves, for personal development, as well as to develop educational and vocational skills.
As we tutor our students, we also form important connections that help in building their self-esteem and confidence.
LDRC provides many services to those in need, both in a practical sense and in providing a holistic and healing approach. The Transformational Learning Center provides students with tools needed for educational and vocational development, and hope and encouragement necessary for success.
ASU Interns model hope and positive professional behavior for individuals who are experiencing homelessness. We find that the positive impact is in the engagement between the students and our population. ASU Interns bring more than skills and education; they care; they help; they teach; and they encourage. They facilitate change and growth.
