ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
This position is at the IRC resettlement shop which is a donated 2 bedroom apartment that has been transformed into a shopping store for our clients. Here they can shop for clothing, kitchen items, shoes, toiletry items, hygiene items, children’s toys, and other household items. Volunteers will help refugees find items that fit their needs as well as track outgoing donations that refugees have selected. Volunteers will help sort and organize donations, and straighten up the shop between client visits.
Population served
Since opening in 1994, the International Rescue Committee in Phoenix has helped resettle over 12,000 refugees from countries such as Iraq, Iran, Bhutan, Burma, Somalia, Congo, Sudan, and Eretria. The Phoenix office is the largest resettlement program in the state of Arizona and offers a holistic approach to resettlement through the provision of diverse programming. Staff members represent more than 26 countries of origin and more than 40 different language capacities. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities IRC works to restore safety, dignity, and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home.
Community need/impact
When refugees resettle in America they come many times with few possessions. Therefore it is important for the community to provide high need items to newly arriving clients to help them adapt and transition effectively.
This opportunity allows volunteers to have a direct impact on improving the standard of living for the Phoenix refugee community. This shop provides high needs items to people in need. This may be a dress clothes for a job interview, kitchen items for a mother to cook for her children, or toys for children to play with.
