ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

The interpreters will:

  • Interpret (verbatim) for patients and physicians/medical students.
  • Assist in the taking of patient histories, vitals, and escorting patients around the Health Center.
  • Assist with contacting patients (over the phone, by email, texting) to remind them about appointments and to make sure they are taking their medications.
  • Assist the Health Educator with translating material for patients and preparing information for health classes.

Population served

The patient population this past year was:

  • 91% uninsured
  • Primarily Hispanic
  • Primarily Spanish-speaking
We saw over 8,000 patients last year, totaling over 15,000 encounters. (Many patients had appointments more than once over the course of the year.)

Community need/impact

The Wesley Health Center serves the medically-underserved community in Phoenix. The interpreter (intern) serves this community by facilitating understanding, by way of interpretation, between patients and medical providers.

As a Federally-Qualified Health Center, the Wesley Health Center provides health services, including sick visits, check-ups, health education, behavioral health counseling, and lab tests, to patients who otherwise would not have access to high-quality, patient-centered healthcare. Our interpreters allow our patients and providers to communicate fully with one another, which in turn allows our providers to offer each patient the very best care.
