Mission: 

Since 1950, Wesley Community Center, located in south central “downtown” Phoenix, AZ, has provided programs, services, and activities for primarily Hispanic families through its Family/Youth Services and the Amigos Center in west Phoenix.   Wesley Health Center, opened in 2003 for uninsured patients, became a FQHC in 2009 through a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and HRSA.  In 2011, primary healthcare services and preventive/health management classes for everyone were provided to over 8,000 unduplicated patients.   Additionally, through partnerships with 26 other non-profit agencies/organizations, community center services supported an additional 7,600 individuals through:  after-school/summer programs; fitness, nutrition, sewing, and gardening classes/opportunities; and emergency food assistance. Wesley's mission statement, "Together We Empower Positive Change," is at the heart of all Wesley programs.

The internship opportunities available at this time are:

  • Interpreting in the Wesley Health Center (see James Williams for scheduling)
  • Tutoring in our After-School Program (3:30-5:30 on M/Tu/Th/F; 1:30-5:30 on Wednesdays)

Duties Semester
Wesley Health Center Interpreter
Fingerprint/background clearance is required.
Training required which may significantly delay start of service hours or which needs to be completed prior to the start of the semester.

The interpreters will:

  • Interpret (verbatim) for patients and physicians/medical students.
  • Assist in the taking of patient histories, vitals, and escorting patients around the Health Center.
  • Assist with contacting patients (over the phone, by email, texting) to remind them about appointments and to make sure they are taking their medications.
  • Assist the Health Educator with translating material for patients and preparing information for health classes...
