Population served
Desert Spirit Elementary is one of 17 schools in the Glendale Elementary School District. All schools are Title I. 89.6% of students are free/reduced lunch. We serve a large majority of students that are English Language Learners. Many of our students begin school with no literacy or math skills. Over 83% of our gifted students are classified as non-verbally gifted. This means that our students are visual learners that require structure.
Community need/impact
Our students are focused on increasing their reading and math abilities. Our school recently began daily intervention blocks in Kinder-8th grade classrooms to increase small group and one-on-one teacher/student interactions in order to differentiate by student need. Our school has few volunteers and could use every hand we can get to support our students in their path to being college and career ready. Volunteers/Interns reading with students to and/or being actively involved in math and reading workstations would help to increase our student success.
Our students crave positive interactions with adults. The more positive interactions our students can have with the community and working with increasing their ability the better. We pride ourselves on putting our students first and doing what is best for their academic success. Involving others in this process will only increase their chances of success in reading and math. Our teachers are eager to have others involved in their classrooms working with students and driving them towards their goals.
