ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

ABIL provides numerous programs for people with disabilities in the Phoenix area.  As an intern for the Comminications & Marketing Department, you will assist in creating and distributing information to our consumers and the general public. This will involve extensive contact with the public as well as the disabled.

ABIL recently opened Spofit.  The unique sports & fitness center is host to amateur regional adaptive sporting events and ongoing recreational activities for members.  The center offers numerous opportunities for interns who have an interest in sports and recreation to develop experience.

Depending on personal skill set, this may involve creating stories, writing press releases, developing marketing material for web site and print, partnership relations and event planning.

Population served

ABIL provides services to adults with physical disabilities.  Thru SpoFit, the organization also provides services to families who have children with disabilities.  The center hosts events for groups such as Wounded Warriors, and national wheelchair basketball tournaments for youth.

Community need/impact

ABIL is the 5th largest non-profit organization in Phoenix.  It has been providing services to people and groups with disabilities for 30 years.   Many people who are experiencing a physical change in their life due to injury or illness look to ABIL to assist in reestablishing their independence.   With a growing population there is no shortage of people within our community that ABIL can assist.

ABIL is involved in numerous types of programs.  And while the organization is large in some respects, it is still small enough that our staff, volunteers and interns have an opportunity to be involved with the numerous aspects of our programs.

This means that interns will be introduced to both the planning and the implementation of our projects.   As an intern, you will experience the results of your efforts based on the personal interaction with consumers, and in the satisfaction of seeing your material published both internally and thru numerous media outlets.
