USL Student MONA DIXON & Community Partner BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA Featured in AT&T Documentary
April 15, 2012

ASU sophomore Mona Dixon was highlighted on the cover of our Winter 2011 newsletter and her remarkable story is featured in AT&T’s U-verse documentary, Inspired. As a homeless teen, Mona found inspiration and hope through the mentoring she received at the Tempe Ladmo branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley, ultimately being named Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s (BGCA) National Youth of the Year in September 2010 and meeting President Obama. Mona attends Barrett Honors College at ASU thanks to full scholarship support from BGCA. Mona's experience at BGCA has come back full-circle and she selected the Tempe Ladmo Branch as her service placement when she enrolled in USL 410 last fall.

Mona’s inspiring story has received both national and international attention being featured in The Huffington Post, The Kenyan Daily Post, and The National Campaign blog. She also appeared in the October 2011 issue of Essence Magazine, sharing the spotlight with such luminaries as Michele Obama and Oprah Winfrey on the magazine’s 2011 Power List: 28 Most Influential Black Women. You can read Mona’s thoughts as she ended her whirlwind year as the 2010-11 BGCA National Youth of the Year on myclubmylife.com.
