ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
ASU UB Afterschool Tutoring Program offers ASU students the opportunity to tutor and mentor high school students who have been identified as low-income and first-generation college bound students. With the guidance of high school instructors, tutors will be responsible for assisting UB students in their high school coursework by providing individual & group tutoring; coursework includes English (Literature/Composition), Mathematics (Pre-Algebra to Calculus), Social Science (History/Government), Laboratory Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.), Foreign Language (Spanish, French, etc.) and Fine Arts. As tutors help students with homework they will also provide academic tips in various areas like study skills, test taking skills, reading skills, etc. as well as life skills such as decision making and self-esteem. Tutors will work with the same students the entire semester allowing the formation of a close, mentoring relationship.
Population served
High School Students, ages 13-19, who have been identified as low-income (per federal guidelines) and/or first-generation (that is, their parents do not have a Bachelor’s degree).
Community need/impact
Arizona consistently ranks toward the bottom of the list of all 50 states in K-12 Education and overall child well-being. Children living in low-income areas may not have access to tutoring services outside of school resources to help increase their academic success resulting in higher high school dropout rates than their middle and upper-class peers. These children also have lower rates of attending college and even lower rates for completing college. In addition, for these Arizona students who do graduate high school and attend college about half of them are unprepared and are in need of enrolling in remedial courses before beginning college level courses.
Interns/Volunteers have the chance to work with the same students for about 64 to 128 hours during the course of the semester to help build their literacy, math and life skills to enhance their academic success. ASU students will become mentors helping build good character and college-going expectations in their tutees.
