ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Student interns will reach out to local businesses, organizations, and agencies in the South Mountain Community and ask for each location to donate and decorate a tree for the Kroc Center. They will then coordinate a decoration day, possibly the week of Thanksgiving. Students can be as creative as they want. Depending on the vision of the students, this can also be open to family memebers of the businesses, and make a decorating party of it with food and music. Each tree will have information about the different organizations and possible partnerships. Once decorations are up, students will get the word out about the trees and provide/organize tours or assign volunteers to provide tours. They can invite the community once or twice a week for tours, music, and free hot cider. Students may also find a way to distribute these trees to families in need before Christmas Day. This can be a fun and challenging project that has lots of room for creativity and growth!
Population served
The area of South Phoenix is a very diverse and culturally rich community. However, the demographics of this community fall below the national average in areas such as education, food, clothing, health care, and many more. The Kroc Center presents opportunities in a state-of-the-art facility to foster wellness, recreation, the arts, education, and spiritual growth.
Community need/impact
This program will provide a sense of community to our center and guests during the Christmas season and the rest of the year. It will also help us reach out to those in our area that do not yet know about the Kroc Center and the programs that we offer. For those groups who donate a tree, we will also be able to help them get the word out about their businesses and non-profit organizations and create potential community partnerships.
The underserved population of Phoenix South Mountain is in need of places and activities that the entire family can enjoy. The Kroc Center is able to provide this by having family friendly and enriching activities for kids, adults, and seniors. Through this Christmas program, the intern will be able to reach parts of the community that we may not otherwise reach, and introduce them to the services offered at the Kroc Center such as after school programs, sports and fitness, music, and our family services office that provides food boxes and rental assistance to those in need. Most of all, they will be able to invite these members to take part in this unique Kroc Community.
