ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
This intern will have direct interactions with our children who attend the Family Evening Meal in the Dream Center. In collaboration with the Dream Center Supervisor, this intern will be responsible for planning and preparing a homework program for the children. Responsibilities include assessment, collaboration with teachers and parents, instructing children individually or in groups, lesson planning, attendance, collecting supplies and keeping accurate notes. In collaboration with the Dream Center Supervisor, the Intern will instruct and facilitate our volunteers in helping with homework, followed by clean up. We do have special needs children and a background in education is desirable. Intern should be organized, detailed oriented and flexible with children's attendance and other activities going on at the Family Evening Meal. Other responsibilities include reminder calls to homework help volunteers, daily communication with Dream Center Coordinator regarding Homework program and reporting homework help attendance to Special Ministries.
Another Internship position available is setting up the Computer Club for the children who attend our Family Evening Meal. Teaching computer skills, accessing sites for homework assistance and monitoring the spaces is required. The Intern will collaborate with our IT staff and Dream Center Supervisor in building upon the existing website. When volunteers are available, the Intern will instruct, facilitate and engage in teaching the computer skills they require.
Population served
Our dining room guests are working poor families with children, with low-wage jobs and often no health insurance, and their budgets are stretched to the limit and beyond. Most parents speak Spanish and can't help their children with homework. These children come to us for homework and computer help. Without Intern students, these kids will not receive the help they so desperately need to succeed in school.
Community need/impact
This internship will address our children attending the Family Evening Meal with homework, computer skills and the strategies necessary to help them succeed in school. The intern(s) will be collaborating with our Volunteers, parents and teachers in the community.
The Intern students will have a positive impact in changing the lives of our children academically in building their character, self-esteem and confidence as a result in helping them with homework and computer skills. Children will be more proficient in technical skills as well as in reading, language, math and writing skills.
