ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

Help conduct research and educational program to develop science-based and problem-solving approaches of pest problems of field crops in central AZ based on the sustainable practices of Integrated Pest Management.

While most of the intern's time will be spent actually doing activities related to the program, internship responsibilities include:

  • Work in different projects in cooperation with the supervisor and growers.
  • Develop evaluation criteria and metrics to measure sustainability outcomes as well as knowledge gained through implementation of project.
  • Work with different community stakeholders to implement project.
  • Develop communication product (e.g. newsletter article, conference poster, PowerPoint presentation) to teach stakeholders and growers about the projects and program outcome.

Population served

In Arizona, 1,125 growers, 204 registered Pest Control Advisors and 866 certified private and commercial applicators (ADA 2011) are managing nearly one million acres of field or row crops (NASS 2011). In 2009 (latest figures available), the value of Arizona’s agricultural production for field crops, vegetables, and melon exceeded $1.4 billion.

Community need/impact

Need assessment surveyes conducted over the last 2 years showed the need for educational and research opportunities for field crops clientele in central AZ.

To help community adopting sustainable practices of pest control. Help acheive higher yield and increase profitability without depliting resources or harming the environment.
