ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Assist classroom teachers with small groups of students or work one on one to help children gain skills in math and reading. Help keep running records of student progress. Help supervise students during snack time, during classroom instruction, and during dismissal. Some computer knowledge is helpful.
Population served
There are approximately 160 students in grades k-6 that will attend the afterschool academy. They are mostly under performing students that do not have the fundamental skills at grade level, or need additional time to master the concepts. Each classroom will have no more than 15 students. Sunburst Elementary School serves 586 students with the following ethnicity groups: 59% White, 7% Black, 27% Hispanic, 2% American Indian, 4% Asian, and 1% other. Our free and reduced lunch count has increased 20% since 2007, with a current count of 58%. Our mobility rate is currently 35%. Sunburst will have ESL classes held in the mornings. Three percent of our population is identified ELL.
Community need/impact
More tutors and classroom assistance are needed to help prepare today's students to be independent, college ready learners.
With more direct instruction and feedback, these students will gain the necessary skills to be successful in school, and productive members of society. Early intervention often prevents these students from dropping out of school or feeling a sense of worthlessness.
