ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Interns will work side by side with teachers, children and familes to develop a new appreciation and respect for gardening. Interns will help plant seeds, maintain the gardens and help harvest the produce. Interns will also help implement activities children will do related to the curriculum, which will include math, science and the arts.
Population served
Educare serves low income young children (toddlers and preschoolers) and families. Benefits to children and population include learning about gardening, nutrition, expanding the curriculum, physical activity, and strengthens relationships in and out of the garden.
Community need/impact
The Educare model was developed to narrow the achievement gap for low income young children. The garden project will help children and families to learn about gardening and teach them about nutrition and raising fresh vegetables in smaller spaces. Gardening will also encourage physical activity and teaches responsibility.
The interns will help the team show children and families how to garden in small spaces adding to their abilities to provide fresh vegetables for their families. The curriculum activities will help the children gain more knowledge to narrow the achievement gap for low income young children.
