The hours are flexible, however they have to be consistent on a weekly basis. They must be during the hours that our office is open (8:00-4:30) since the computer lab is located on our premises.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

To increase the marketablity of our clients, as the computer instructor you will help them gain the necessary basic understanding to succeed in the modern workplace and environment in general. To do so you will:

  • Teach weekly computer classes with the provided curriculum
  • Monitor client progress
  • Design interactive and creative ways to help clients learn how to use the computer
  • Instruct pairs of clients or tutor clients 1-1
  • Teach clients relevant basic computer lingo

Population served

Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest Refugee and Immigration Services provides resettlement services to clients from countries that include: Iraq, Iran, Bhutan, Burma, Congo, Eritrea, Somalia, Cuba and more. LSS-SW Refguee and Immigration Services serves approximately 600 newly arrived refugees each year. The student intern will likely work with some or all of these ethnic groups.

Community need/impact

The internship will directly assist newly arriving refugee families with acclimating to their new lives in the US. All of the endeavors of this position will provide much needed training in basic to intermediate computer skills to our clients, many of which have lived in refugee camps for over 20 years and have never had access to this kind of technology.

Clients will be more marketable in their job search, which will help them become self-sufficient sooner. The computer skills will also help them become confident and independent members of society.
