COMMUNITY PARTNER

Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona is currently seeking tutors to support the Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program. Tutors work with AVID students in study groups and individually, assisting them in all academic areas to make progress commensurate with college expectations.

Tutoring in AVID is different from any job you have held before. Being part of a program at the forefront of education is highly challenging and requires extraordinary commitment, yet its rewards are many. More than anything else, tutoring in AVID is the best preparation possible for a career in teaching or in any other job which is people oriented.

AVID tutorials take place in small groups that are subject area specific. AVID tutors assist the students achieve their full potential by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups. Tutors use Socratic questioning and collaborative learning techniques to help the students come up with the answers to their questions on their own and by working with fellow students.

Population served

Students attending GLAAZ come from all over the greater Phoenix area. Most students will be the first in their family to attend college with an increased need for mentors, role models, and support systems to develop a college-going mindset. As a Title I school, the majority of students come from families living at or below the federal poverty level.

Community need/impact

Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona is a Title I charter high school, and it is the first and only public, single gender school in the state. With limited funding, GLAAZ relies heavily on volunteers to support the AVID program.

1.    Take an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students.

2.    Serve as a role model/mentor to AVID students by being a lifelong learner, as well as demonstrating appropriate academic and social behaviors.

3.    Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
