ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

The intern will provide one hour of ESL education to adolescents 13-17 twice a week.  The intern will also provide two to three hours per week of age appropriate activities for the youth.  In addition, the applicant will create curriculum, and conduct pre and post education assessments.

Population served

The youth served by Casa are 13 to 17 years old, and are in this country undocumented and unaccompanied by an adult.  They are currently going through immigration proceedings.  They are from Central America.  Most speak only Spanish but need to develop English language skills, since they will likely be able to stay in this country.

Community need/impact

Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development provides residential and non-residential services to various populations of homeless youth.  The Casa de Suenos program is federally funded to provide housing and services through three homes, serving a total of 30 youth, 10 per home.

The majority of these youth will be able to remain in the US legally.  ESL services are necessary to equip them to pursue a productive life as a legal resident or a citizen.  The youth also need opportunities to be youth, since most have been working in the fields since a young age.
