Population served

The students will serve refugee and latino students. There are over 36 different languages spoken in this community and the children usually speak english as a second language and do not grasp the concepts being taught in school when first introduced. The students served usually come home to an empty house due to parents working odd shifts and multiple jobs to provide the families basic needs. The afterschool program is a safehaven for the youth to come receive help with their homework, participate in fun activites, and receive an afterschool snack.

Community need/impact

Many of the students being served speak english as a second language. Many of the parents are not literate in english and are unable to assist their children with homework, book reports, and long term assignments. As a result the children do not complete their homework and receive less than desirable grades.

Not only will the intern gain a global experience by volunteering; the tutor will improve educational outcomes for students who are at risk for academic failure.  This opportunity will also provide an opportunity to build positive relationships and opportunity for positive social interaction; resulting in increased communication skills, social skills, and become more proficient in english.
