ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

Education, Social Work, and Recreation Management students are needed to help make a difference in the lives of seniors at 1 of 15 City of Phoenix Senior Centers. Each day, hundreds of seniors without friends or family rely on Senior Center programs to make connections and forge new friendships with their peers. Students will plan creative, fun, and active opportunities and social events for seniors such as special anniversaries, celebrations, and/or holidays.

Recreational Assistants will develop their ability to or gain experience with:

  • Lesson planning and curriculum development
  • Classroom and group session management techniques
  • Working with diverse populations
  • Program implementation
  • Utilizing teaching, counseling, and/or interpersonal skills
  • Learn about the Human Services Department and its services
  • Make a difference
  • And potentially assist in other areas or programs where needed

If you are looking to make a meaningful impact in someone’s life while gaining valuable teaching skills, this is the perfect service learning opportunity for you.

Population served

Students will serve the senior population. Many older adults are without friends and family. Because of this, they commonly miss out on important opportunities to maintain a positive qualitiy of life by staying social and active. Senior Center programs help older adults forge new friendships and give seniors a sense of purpose.

Community need/impact

This internship will help seniors combat the challenges many of them face with maintaining active, fulfilling, and social lives due to their lack of family and/or friends.

Students will have the chance to make a positive difference in the lives of older adults by planning fun, creative events that help them stay active, healthy, and form important, new social connections with their peers.
