ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Duties

Education and Social Work students are needed to help make a difference in the lives of seniors at 1 of 15 City of Phoenix Senior Centers. Each day, hundreds of seniors without friends or family rely on Senior Center programs to make connections and forge new friendships with their peers. Students will teach seniors how to continue to connect to these vital services and activities using a new, computer based system.

Senior Center Educational Assistants will have the chance to develop or advance their ability to:

· Utilize teaching, counseling, and/or interpersonal skills

· Work with diverse populations

· Learn about the Human Services Department and its services

· Make a difference

· And potentially assist in other areas or programs where needed

If you are looking to make a meaningful impact in someone’s life while gaining valuable teaching skills, this is the perfect service learning opportunity for you.

Population served

Students will serve the senior population. Many older adults are without friends and family. Because of this, they commonly miss out on important opportunities to maintain a positive qualitiy of life by staying social and active. Senior Center programs help older adults forge new friendships and give seniors a sense of purpose.

Community need/impact

The skills students teach seniors will help them understand how to stay connected to the various programs offered at the Senior Centers. This will ensure that seniors are still able to access vital services and activities that allow them to connect and forge friendships with peers.

The skills students teach will enable seniors to maintain positive, active lifestyles because they will understand how to remain connected to Senior Center programs using the new, computer based system.
