ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Teach children ages 5-13 during the summer. There are several teaching opportunities available: Reading, Physical Education, History, Geography, Dance, Music, Arts and Crafts, Science, Computers, Spanish, Math, and accompany the classes on Field Trips (Museums, Movies, Skating, and the Zoo). Interns are encouraged to select the subject(s) of their choice and can be discussed during the interview process.
The classes are groups of no more than 10 students. The youth have a main teacher and the students will serve as specialty teachers (almost like jr. high where classes are rotated). The interns will teach all age groups (K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8) and each class is about 1 hour long and taught 2x per week (8 hours of direct service if 1 subject is chosen). The intern can choose to be assistant teachers and volunteer certain days of the week helping with all of the subjects and assisting the teacher. Two interns can team up to teach a subject together if they are working with a 5:1 ratio (the main teacher will always be available to help).
Population served
The populations served are children of working families and at-risk youth who are currently in foster care. The children range from ages 5-13. All children need to engage in activities to build self confidence and self esteem, develop positive leadership skills, learn to work as a team, and other pro-social activities to foster healthy growth from adolescence to adulthood. Many of our customers cannot find affordable programs for their children to attend during the summer and as a community development corporation it is our duty to help meet the needs of our community.
Community need/impact
There is currently a lack of quality safe and affordable places for working parents to send their children during summer vacation. Often time's parents are forced to leave their children at home while they are away at work and the children miss meals, physical activity, and are usually watching television and forgetting what they learned over the school year. Our program is designed to increase social and academic literacy as well as cultivate future leaders. In addition to those goals we are advocates for healthy eating and active living; and physical activity and balanced nutritious meals are apart of the program as well.
Interns will be able to assist by: increasing the knowledge of 40+ students, exposing students to pro-social activities, develop leadership skills, improve self confidence and self esteem, be a role model, and assist with the success of Rehoboth CDC's Summer Enrichment Program.
