ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Intern duties include: Assisting with instructing children in small-group reading activities, working with individual children or small groups of children to reinforce new skills initially introduced by the Reading Specialist or classroom teacher, and assisting with implementing special strategies for reinforcing skills based on the needs and abilities of each child.
Population served
A large portion of our students are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of the students have been traditionally underserved and would greatly benefit from extra support from the community.
Community need/impact
A shared effort of strategic partnerships between the school and community is an effective way to strengthen schools and student learning. Interns will be working with students who are below grade-level in reading by providing support to develop reading skills.
Research on community engagement has found that when communities mobilize around school improvement efforts many positive outcomes can be attained, including improved student achievement.
