Hospice Intern/Volunteer

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Fingerprint/background clearance is required.Training required which may significantly delay start of service hours or which needs to be completed prior to the start of the semester.
Interns/Volunteers must complete a 12 hour Volunteer Training class PRIOR to seeing a hospice patient. A volunteer manual will be provided, along with visual aides.Training can be very flexible.Training does NOT need to be at our office.Background checks are required (free of charge). Background checks are done during the training process. TB screening will be provided (free of charge).

REQUIRED/DESIRED SKILLS
One must have compassion, and empathy. The desire to be a friend to someone in need. One must be comfortable with death and dying. Be a good listener.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Duties
Volunteers/Interns will work with hospice patients who have a life expectancy of six months or less. Interns can read a book, watch tv, play a game/crafts, provide respite care to the caregiver, or just hold a hand. Volunteers are to provide companionship and socialization to patient and familes.
Population served
Comprehensive Hospice serves patients 18 years and older. However, most of our patients are Medicare age.
Community need/impact
Volunteers/Interns will provide companionship, respite to hospice patients and their families.
Working with hospice patients is one of the most rewarding experiences one will experience. Walking through this journey with a hospice patient and their family is indeed an honor. An experience you will NEVER forget.
