Abstract: Producing research in the public interest carries with it an implicit demand - that research find its way to a variety of audiences in a way that is useable and meaningful. Writing for practitioners, policymakers and the media usually requires a different set of technical skills, conceptual orientations and lexicon than that exercised by researchers in the pursuit bring published in an academic journal or scholarly book. The question is, can research be written in a way that reduces the conceptual and language load without sacrificing the complexity of the content? The question is made even more challenging by the fact that researchers are rarely formally taught how to accomplish this task. This interactive workshop will provide in-depth and specific information about writing for each of the three target audiences through a series of presentations and hands-on writing activities using examples drawn from research journals.
